A working brain: Facebook ads the Biden campaign showed of their candidate using full sentences.

18 / ‘The Big Lie’ Lie

‘Anyone who thinks my story is anywhere near over is sadly mistaken.’

—Donald J. Trump

By mid-2020 the election was already lost for Trump despite polling day being months away.

His failed response to the covid crisis had fuelled a desire to return to normalcy that flipped the advantage of covid incumbency demonstrated in other elections around the world held during the pandemic. His campaign could no longer rely on mustering some votes and suppressing others to get the electoral college results needed to remain president. By any count, Trump wouldn’t have the votes.

They had to find a new strategy.

This election was like no other, thanks to the pandemic that was surging around them and which by election day was taking more than 1000 lives and adding 100,000 new cases each day.

His campaign instead set about laying the narrative groundwork for a radical alternative to winning the electoral college: contesting the ultimate result.

To aid him in these efforts, Trump had the entire right-wing ecosystem that had been built and then severed from any central fact-based reality. It was the ideal environment to invent a new truth that widespread voter fraud had snuck in under the cover of covid and the remote early voting the pandemic precipitated.
